Forgotten Cartoons Ep. 53: The X's

Hey there! It's about time for a new episode of "Forgotten Cartoons"! Today's show was requested by mrskeletonman. I've done two shows requested by him in the past. One was solid ("My Dad The Rock Star") and the other was so-so ("Wayside"). Let's see how today's show holds up. It is called "The X's". "The X's" was created by Carlos Ramos, and it aired on Nickelodeon for exactly one year from November 2005 through November 2006. It has only one season and 20 episodes (38 segments) to its name. The series centers on a nuclear family of four known as the X's. They are all highly trained spies who work for SUPERIOR, a covert agency sworn to defend Earth from evil. An organization called S.N.A.F.U. (short for Society of Nefarious and Felonious Undertakings) led by the evil Glowface is continually trying to cause trouble for the X's and other SUPERIOR agents through their plans to take over the world. In the meantime, the X's must conceal their identity from the outside world but normally

I watched "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" earlier. It was fun. Good mindless monster mash of a film. Funny how much some of the stuff with Kong in the movie made me think, just a little, of Primal. If only for the lack of dialogue and the importance of character through action and expression. I have to say, while he was only onscreen for a very short while, all told, I did really like the Skar King as a villain. He was just vicious, with a sadistic streak that almost matches King Ghidorah. You watch his scenes and find yourself eagerly waiting for Kong and Godzilla to punish him. It was also funny to me to think how the Monsterverse really builds up to Kong becoming, well, King Kong. On Skull Island he was "king" by virtue of protecting the Iwi. In "Godzilla versus Kong" he finds his axe and claims a throne, but that ancient home is long dead; Kong's "kingship" is a technicality more than anything deeper. Then in this film, he stands up to, and then overthrows a tyrant.

Just finished the final issue of "Superman 78: The Metal Curtain". This was a very fun, straightforward-but-clever miniseries! A good follow-up to the first Superman 78 comic and I can only hope that DC greenlights another installment sometime down the road. :) Robert Venditti has done a fine job with telling good Superman stories in the setting of the Donnerverse - I particularly love his takes on Brainiac and Metallo - and it'd be great to see what else he could do with a third volume. Maybe we'll finally get to see Bizarro or Mr. Mxyzptlk square off against Chris Reeve's Superman? :D Only can dream, at any rate.

La Llorona (2019)

La Llorona (2019) ** ½ The poor Weeping Woman has a spotty filmography. I have not seen her American releases, though judging by word of mouth they are not great. Her Guatemalan La Llorona (2019), directed by Jayro Bustemante, has a lot to say. Though it too has problems. A veiled woman speaks in what looks like an empty space. The camera slowly pulls back, revealing that she’s in a packed court room. She accuses aging General Don Enrique (Julio Diaz) of genocide towards her people, the Mayan-Ixil. She recalls her rape and other atrocities carried out by the General’s men. We learn she is the 82nd witness. Outside of that court, the film mostly stays in Don’s home, where he, his family, and their maids are walled in by protesters. In a genius move, the protesters are not just there for story, but provide background ambiance through shouting and music. The family hires a new maid, Alma (María Mercedes Coroy). She has flowing hair and a quiet demeanor. It is hinted that Alma may
